The Name Of Lake

Once a fisherman named Gemby in Bataknese Land. One day, he caught the fish. To his surprise, he found that the fish could talk. It begged Gemby to set it free. Gemby did accordingly.

As soon as the fish was free, it changed into a woman. She was so beautiful that the fisherman feel in love with her at once. He asked to marry him. The woman agreed to marry with Gemby. However, she told him that he must never let out the secret that she was once the fish. Gemby promised her that he would not tell anyone about it.

They were hapily married, and had two daughter. Every morning, Gemby went out fishing. His daughter would bring him his lunch. One day, learnt what they had done with his meal, he got very angry. He shouted at them, saying “you behaved exactly like the daughter of a fish.”

The girls did know what their father meant. They went home and asked their mother about it. When they told her what he said, she was very annoyed. Altough Gemby apologized to her later, she would not forgive him for breaking his promise.

Then, the earth began tremble, and volcanoes started to erupt. The earth cracked to form a big hole. People said that this hole became Lake Toba.

Genetic Research

Genetic research has produced both exiting and frightening possibilities. Scientists are now able to create new forms of live in the laboratory due to the development of genesplicing.
On the one hand, the ability to create life in laboratory could greatly benefit mandkind. For example, because it is very expensive to obtain insulin from natural sources, scientis have developed a method to manufacture it inexpensively in the laboratory.

Another benefical application of genesplicing is in agriculture. Scientists foresee the day when new plants will be developed using nitrogen from the air instead of from fertilizer. Therefore food production could be increased. In addition, entirely new plants could be developed to feed the world’s hungry people.

Not everyone is excited about genesplicing, however. Some people feel that it could have terrible consequences. A laboratory accident, for example might cause an epidemic of an unknown disease that could wipe out humanity.

As result of this controversy, the government has made rules to control genetics experiment. While some members of the scientific community feel that these rules are too strict, many other people feel that they are still not strict enough.
